Proposal before the DDA
Pending Approval
Ray Oldenburg called it the third place. Not home. Not work. The café, the square, the covered market: the place where a city breathes together. Miami, for all its beauty, has never quite built one.
Bay Front on The Water changes that. A series of connected floating barges, anchored in Biscayne Bay off downtown, open to anyone with the will to walk across the gangplank. No cover charge. No minimum. No reservation required.
Local vendors serving food, drink, and produce operate alongside open-air stages, hammock fields, and Adirondack chair lawns arranged under custom shade sails. The decks connect, so you wander. The water surrounds, so the city recedes.
This is not a development project. It carries no hotel floors, no condominiums, no retail tonnage. It is a public amenity, modeled on the great floating parks of Hamburg and Copenhagen, adapted for Miami's subtropical light and year-round outdoor life.
The proposal is before the Miami Downtown Development Authority for seed funding and site approval. The barges would be anchored under long-term lease from the Port of Miami, with operating costs covered by vendor revenue and modest event partnerships.
The Downtown Development Authority funds public realm improvements within Miami's urban core. Bay Front on The Water qualifies as infrastructure for human gathering: the most essential kind.
Miami-rooted vendors only. Rotating stalls, no chains, no franchises. The food is as local as the water.
Learn More →Two open-air stages with programming from local curators: jazz, Afrobeat, electronic, classical. Always free, always unannounced.
Learn More →Hammocks strung between posts, Adirondack chairs arranged under shade sails. Designed for doing nothing particularly well.
Learn More →Three barges linked by gangplanks. The layout encourages wandering. No dead ends, no fixed destination. Just the bay on all sides.
Learn More →Rotating programming: sunset yoga, open mics, civic talks, pop-up markets. Curated by Miami organizations, not outside promoters.
Full Calendar →No ticket, no membership, no app required. A public amenity in the literal sense: for every resident, every visitor, every afternoon.
